Homework for October 15 – 22
Homework: October 15 – October 18th (due on Monday of next week because of Learning Conferences)
PARENTS: There is more homework than usual, because students do not see me on Thursday or Friday of this week. They have both of these days, PLUS the entire weekend to complete the assigned work.
Math: Please complete Weight Worksheet, finis observations from Weight experiment (after Tuesday in lab) and complete (in your math work book) all of the division tables for every number between 4 – 9.
Wordly Wise: Please complete Lesson 3 – but please do not complete 3B: we will be completing this lesson in class.
Reading Response: Please complete your 20 minutes of reading per night and write a synopsis on our class blog. You should also answer the following question about your reading:
What is the main conflict or problem in the story? How does the main problem effect the main characters? Is the problem one that you have experienced or one that you might experience in your life? Write about how you feel about this main problem/conflict. How would you feel if you were experiencing the problem?
Language Arts: You should be practicing your oral presentation of the folktale we practiced a couple of weeks ago. We will be recording them and making them into a podcast. Remember to think about the way you are telling the story – your voice is very important to helping the audience understand the meaning of the story. Our written folktales are also due soon (by the Friday before the break) so, if you are still working on the rough copy you might want to start taking it home and asking your parents to read and/or edit your writing.

5DA News – From Stijn van der Burg
The class of 5DA has done some efficient work this week. We have started our measurement unit for math (although I am still confused with converting). We have also each made a house out of either Lego or cardboard. Then we measured the furniture and people in/outside of it. WE have worked on the rough copies of our folk tales and made schedules for the time to come. One of the daily routines is the morning activity, and one of the weekly routines are the jobs – although the dragon tamer job will probably turn into the mouse tamer.

We did some learning in the science lab today.
We had the chance to use our well-resourced science lab in our new math unit, which we began today. We are starting to learn about the different kinds of measurement units such as centimetres, metres, kilometres and milimetres. Students spent some time today measuring different objects and recording their results. Excellent work today.
Homework for October 8 – 13
Homework is due on October 13th:
Math: Complete both sides of the measurement worksheets (14.1/14.2)
Metric Room – Remember that your metric room is due on Friday.
Language Arts: Spelling – Studying words from Wordly Wise (Lesson 2). Test on Friday the 13th.
ProofReaders Challenge – Proof read and correct (on the sheet) the short story.
Reading Response – Synopsis, plus a two paragraph response to the following question:
Put yourself in the shoes of your main character. Would you make the same choices and decisions that they have been making throughout the story? Defend your answer with well thought out reasons.
Uncategorized | Comment (0)Homework for next week AND a note to parents and teachers….
Hello!
Find below the homework instructions for the following week. I hope that by getting this information out a bit earlier every week we might be able to cure some of the homework struggles. Thanks again to all the parents who offered their valuable input on Tuesday night! Thank you.
I also wanted to share some successes with parents -
The Blog is amazing. Students are writing and sharing amazing things about literature and they are discovering things about books and themselves as readers that I don’t think they otherwise would. A truly wonderful thing has happened – our ESL students have started to post about their own reading experiences. What a wonderful event. Please keep it up and, parents – please encourage your children to use this tool.
The students in 5DA have had a month of remarkable discoveries and accomplishments. To mark the one month anniversary of fifth grade, I spent a couple of minutes sharing with the children how wonderful they are and the great leaps they have taken as the year has gotten under way. Your children have learned about culture, folk tales, narratives, social justice and technology. A wonderful start – keep it up!
We did have a sad loss today – when I came into work this morning, it was to the death of Twinkle Toes – our smallest Dragon. A loss that wasn’t a surprise to me or the students as she was quite small.
Find below the homework for next week – which I will explain in FULL detail to students on Monday.
Best to everyone and have a wonderful weekend!!
Miss Daniel
